Thailand has granted a new visa policy which will allow Indians with passports to enjoy a visa waiver facility for 30 days. The new decision, which has been sanctioned by the Thai Cabinet, is an amendment to the existing 60-day visa exemption policy of Thailand, introduced in July 2024.

The policies shall come into effect after their announcement in the Royal Gazette. After their implementation, people from India visiting Thailand for either recreational purposes or conducting their business activities will no longer require any Visa on Arrival (VoA) or visas. They would be allowed a stay of up to 30 days without having any of these.

What Has Changed?

Thailand Approves 30-Day Visa

Previously, Indians were entitled to a 60-day visa-free entry facility, which was granted on a temporary basis from July 2024 as an effort to boost foreign tourism. The visa exemption period in the new scheme is now 30 days.

In addition, India moves from the Visa on Arrival (VoA) country list to the country list for 30 days’ visa exemption. This implies that people traveling to Thailand under the above classification do not require visas as long as their duration of stay is within 30 days.

Why Thailand Has Revised the Rules

Thailand’s government said that the new visa policies are intended to find a balance between increased tourism and tighter immigration regulation.

There have been reports regarding the abuse of visa-free privileges by certain foreigners in order to carry out unauthorized employment and other activities which are not part of tourism. With the reduction of the exemption stay duration to 30 days, the government of Thailand will make sure that the visa exemption service is utilized mainly by tourists.

The revised framework is one of the components of the comprehensive reform of Thailand's immigration system, where eligible countries are divided into various periods for visa exemptions and visas on Arrival.

What It Means for Indian Travelers

The new policy is not likely to affect the majority of Indian tourists significantly, as an average vacation in Thailand lasts less than two weeks for most Indians.

The advantage of the visa exemption of 30 days lies in its ability to make the whole process easier without an application process or the Visa on Arrival. However, individuals who want to spend more than 30 days have to apply for a Thai visa before traveling to Thailand.

Final Thoughts: When Will the New Rules Take Effect?

Despite the approval of the new visa rules by the Thai Cabinet, they will only be made legally enforceable after the new rules have been published in the Royal Gazette. Until then, travelers should adhere to the current visa rules.

Thailand is one of the most favorite places for Indian tourists when it comes to foreign countries, and the new visa exemption policy will ensure that visits are easy while further enhancing the immigration system of the country.
